Background of the Study

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of many economies, including Nigeria's, but they are increasingly vulnerable to cybersecurity threats due to limited resources and expertise in managing digital security risks. As SMEs in Taraba State become more reliant on digital platforms for business operations, they face a heightened risk of cyberattacks, including data breaches, ransomware, and phishing schemes (Afolabi et al., 2024). The ability of SMEs to safeguard sensitive business and customer data is critical, yet many businesses remain unaware of the most prevalent cybersecurity threats and lack the necessary measures to mitigate them. This study investigates the cybersecurity threats faced by Nigerian SMEs in Taraba State and examines how businesses respond to these challenges.

Statement of the Problem

The rapid digital transformation of Nigerian SMEs has led to an increase in exposure to cybersecurity threats, yet many businesses in Taraba State lack adequate cybersecurity measures or awareness. Understanding the types of threats SMEs face and the effectiveness of their response mechanisms is crucial for improving digital security and minimizing risks. This study seeks to explore the current cybersecurity landscape for SMEs in Taraba State and the key challenges they face in implementing cybersecurity measures.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the most common cybersecurity threats faced by SMEs in Taraba State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of cybersecurity practices implemented by SMEs in Taraba State.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving cybersecurity awareness and practices among SMEs in Taraba State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the most common cybersecurity threats faced by SMEs in Taraba State?
  2. How effective are the cybersecurity measures implemented by SMEs in Taraba State?
  3. What strategies can be adopted to improve cybersecurity awareness and practices in SMEs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Cybersecurity threats significantly affect the operations of SMEs in Taraba State.
  2. The current cybersecurity measures adopted by SMEs in Taraba State are ineffective in mitigating common threats.
  3. Proposed strategies will significantly enhance the cybersecurity awareness and practices of SMEs in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on SMEs in Taraba State that rely on digital platforms for their operations. Limitations include challenges in obtaining access to private business data and the potential reluctance of SMEs to disclose cybersecurity-related incidents.

Definitions of Terms

Cybersecurity Threats: Any potential danger or malicious activity targeting a business’s digital assets, including hacking, malware, phishing, and data breaches.
SMEs: Small and medium-sized enterprises that typically have fewer resources and smaller employee bases than larger corporations.
